As you know, blogger Annette from I Heart Vintage Couture came to the Penny Chic HQ to style a couple looks and this polka dot number is her second outfit (click here for the first one she modeled). Like me, Annette is a true girly girl. She’s always in heels and is often wearing frilly feminine dresses. When she saw this polka dot number from Walmart hanging on one of the Penny Chic racks, it was instant connection. Instead of piling on the jewelry and accessories, Annette went with a cleaner look. The simple pink clutch gives the ensemble a pop, but doesn’t over clutter.

The side stripe pant is pretty MAJOR right now. Don’t get this trend confused with the side stripe you see on a track suit though! This is more of a tuxedo pant that’s inspired by menswear, rather than a sporty outfit.

When I went to Forever21 to look for tuxedo pants, I could only find a size larger than I normally wore. I thought this would be a problem but when I tried it on, I decided I liked the loose fit of the pant. It makes it more casual and cool, rather than uptight and tailored. I paired the pants with a plain ol tee I got from Target AGES ago. This is a tee I actually cropped myself (yes you can see my belly button but I don’t mind) and to elevate the look, I wore my new favorite strappy heels from ShoeDazzle.

Love everything about this outfit. It’s so yummy! I love the mix of the loud floral print and the preppy polka dot polo shirt. It’s such a fresh combination and perfect for the transition of Spring to Summer. The necklace adds another burst of color to the ensemble and brings out some of the colors from the pants. Would you ever wear an outfit as colorful as this?

Meet Amanda and Garet, the founders of Installation Magazine, the first ever ALL digital contemporary art magazine. Their next issue comes out Friday and will feature some interesting art inspired fashion by yours truly! Click here to download the app on iTunes.  Amanda and I have known each other since 8th grade. We bonded over being lit nerds and often found ourselves partnering up for book presentations and bouncing ideas off of each other for our final papers. As I headed down the road of fashion (no academia or literature in sight), Amanda has clearly gone in a different direction, one that’s more of a…shall we say….intellectual pursuit. She and her partner Garet have managed to make contemporary art, something that can often be pretentious, a more hands-on, interactive, and tactile experience. I just LOVE seeing people my age do cool things, don’t you?

When it came to the fashion, I tried to stay true to their personal styles while still branching them out a little. Amanda is famous for her black cashmere crewnecks, but instead of black, I pushed a bright blue cardigan on her and then a bright red trench and suddenly she was all about the color! The leopard loafers were just icing on the cake and certainly add an interesting twist to the red and blue combo. Garet’s outfit combines the same colors as Amanda’s, because afterall, they are business partners. I love how Garet’s sneakers are leather and just a bit more formal than your average sneaks. The end result is two looks that could be worn to a gallery opening or meeting with an artist, two things that these two do all the time. Sounds like fun right?

I can’t seem to get enough of the nautical trend. It is just a classic look.

We were able to liven up this outfit a bit with a pop of color. The summery turquoise flower necklace adds a little life to the whole ensemble, don’t you think?!

Also, you may recognize the tote from another post we did a couple of weeks ago. A scarf can be a great accessory to tie an outfit together but you can also use the scarf as an accessory on your purse. It just gives it a little something extra!

For this week’s “So Chic” challenge we’re following the MET Gala’s lead and taking on the PUNK trend. Am I hanging around too many fashion people or is the word “punk” being thrown around in every sentence !? I happen to be on board on with the fad but there are a couple tips to note when taking on this tricky trend:

1. Pick ONE punky staple piece, preferably with some hardware on it like spikes or studs. In this case I chose a studded vest.
2. Pair the punky staple with feminine pieces to balance thing’s out. I chose a tutu. Clearly, this is taking feminine to a whole other level.
3. Add a neon accent. Neon is part of the punk look without being too aggressive or masculine. I chose neon pumps but you could go with a neon belt, jewelry or bag.
